PATIENT GUIDANCE

Why see a Foot & Ankle specialist?

Foot and ankle problems can involve several structures at the same time — bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and the mechanics of the entire limb. Some injuries may also appear straightforward initially but become more apparent with a detailed examination or appropriate imaging.

A Foot & Ankle specialist has focused training in these conditions and can assess the problem from both a non-operative and surgical perspective. This does not mean that every problem requires specialist surgery — often, the most appropriate treatment is rehabilitation, activity modification, footwear or observation.

The aim is simply to identify the problem accurately, understand what is causing the symptoms, and choose the least invasive treatment that is appropriate for the individual patient.
